DJI in 2026: why waiting is the riskier choice

DJI gear has a Black Friday track record, and in a normal year a drone or an Osmo Pocket would sit in the “worth waiting for” row. 2026 is not a normal year for DJI in the US, and the details matter:

• On December 22, 2025, the FCC added foreign-produced drones and drone components to its Covered List, which bars covered equipment from receiving new equipment authorizations. Law firm Wiley’s December 2025 analysis was that this did not stop sales of existing models authorized before the change; in March 2026 Wiley reported that some authorizations had been revoked without the FCC publicly listing which devices.
• On July 21, 2026, the FCC proposed ending the import and marketing of previously authorized drones on the Covered List in several “military-grade” categories, one of which covers drones with LiDAR. DroneDJ reports that the affected DJI models include the Mini 5 Pro and Air 3S. The FCC states the proposal would not affect continued use of drones people have already bought. No decision had been published when we checked.
• A 25% import duty on drones with a maximum take-off weight of 25 kg or less took effect on September 3, 2026.
• Beyond drones, DJI has said its Osmo Pocket 4 will not be available in the US while its authorization application is pending.

None of that tells you what a DJI product will cost in November, and we are not predicting it. It does mean the usual “just wait for Black Friday” advice carries a stock risk for DJI that it does not carry for, say, a Sony lens. If you are buying a drone as a gift, also note that the FAA requires recreational flyers to take its free TRUST test, and drones weighing 250 grams or more must be registered. What our own daily price checks show

We check the Amazon price of every product in our guides every day, and that record makes one thing clear: prices move all year, not just in November. Between July 18 and September 15, 2026, with no holiday sale running, the Sony a6400, Fujifilm X100VI, Samsung T7 and ASUS ProArt PA278CV each changed price more than 20 times. Over the same checks, the Sony a7 IV and the Shure MV7+ held a single price every single time.

Two practical lessons follow. First, for products whose price swings often, a good price can turn up well before Black Friday — so a fair price today on something needed now is not a mistake. Second, a November “deal” is only a deal against the price people were actually paying, which is exactly what the next section is about.

How to tell a real deal from a fake one

Check what the “was” price really is. Amazon publishes how it defines its reference prices. Its List Price is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, which Amazon says it only shows if customers bought the product, or other retailers offered it, at or above that price within the past 90 days (180 for seasonal products). Its Typical Price is the median price customers actually paid over the past 90 days, excluding limited-time promotions. A discount measured against what people really paid tells you more than one measured against a suggested price.

Know what a fake discount looks like. The FTC’s Guides Against Deceptive Pricing say a former price is a legitimate basis for a price comparison when it was the actual, bona fide price offered to the public for a reasonably substantial period — and that an inflated price set up to advertise a large reduction makes the “bargain” a false one.

Compare the whole purchase. The FTC’s shopping advice is to check the total cost including shipping and fees, check return policies on sale items, and find out whether you can get a credit if the price drops after you buy.

Compare sellers, not just prices. For cameras and lenses, manufacturer instant savings run through authorized dealers — Canon’s 2025 rebate prices, for example, were listed at several retailers at once — while Nikon’s terms say each dealer sets its actual selling price. Check who the seller is before you compare the number.
