The camera is the biggest single decision in a creator’s kit, and it’s the one people overthink the most. The truth is that almost every camera sold today takes excellent photos and shoots sharp 4K. What separates them is not image quality in good light — it’s the handful of things that actually change how you work: whether the screen flips forward so you can see yourself, whether the autofocus sticks to a moving subject, whether it stabilizes handheld footage, and how much you have to spend to get those things.

That is how we sort these guides. Rather than one giant “best camera” list, we split cameras by the job you’re buying one for. A few things we say a lot, because they save people money. Sensor size matters more than megapixels — a 24-megapixel APS-C camera will beat a 20-megapixel 1-inch compact in low light every time, and almost nobody needs more than 24 to 33 megapixels. In-body stabilization is worth paying for if you shoot handheld video, and close to irrelevant if you shoot on a tripod. And the lens changes your images more than the body does — which is why a mid-range camera with one good prime often looks better than an expensive body on its kit zoom.
