Key light, panel or COB?

An edge-lit key light panel (like the Elgato) is soft, tidy and software-controlled — ideal for a fixed desk. A small on-camera LED is portable and battery-powered, better as a fill or a travel light than a main key. A COB light with a softbox is the most powerful and shapeable, but it needs a stand and takes up space — that’s the lighting kits route.

For a desk streamer, one key light in front plus a background accent (an RGB panel or tube) is the classic clean look. Add a ring light from our ring light guide if you prefer front-on, shadowless lighting instead.

What is a key light?

The key light is the main, brightest light on your subject — usually placed in front and slightly to one side. Everything else (fill, background, hair lights) supports it. For a simple setup, the key light is the one that matters most.

Why buy a software-controlled key light?

Convenience and consistency. You adjust brightness and color from your PC or phone without touching the light, save settings, and get the same look every stream. For fixed desk setups, that's worth the premium over a generic panel.

Are on-camera LED panels bright enough to be a key light?

For close-up, on-the-move work they can be a key, but they're low-output — better as a fill or travel light than a main key for a full scene. For a proper desk key, an edge-lit panel or a COB light does more.

Key light or ring light for streaming?

Both work. A key light off to one side gives a more dimensional, cinematic look and integrates with streaming software; a ring gives flat, even, front-on light with a circular catchlight. Many streamers use a key light plus a background accent.
