Building a lighting setup

Start with one key light, positioned in front of you and slightly to one side, with a softbox to make it flattering. That single light, plus a window or a cheap fill, covers most talking-head video. Add a background light — like the RGB panel — when you want separation and color, and a second key or fill only when you genuinely need it.

What's a COB light and why does it matter?

A COB (chip on board) LED is a single powerful light source, usually on a Bowens mount so you can attach softboxes and modifiers. That combination — bright output plus the ability to shape the light — is what gives you cinematic, controllable lighting rather than flat front light.

How many lights do I need to start?

One good key light with a softbox covers most talking-head video, especially with a window as fill. Add a background or fill light only when you have a specific reason. Don't buy a three-light kit before you've mastered one light.

What is a Bowens mount?

Bowens is the most common lens-mount standard for studio lights, meaning a huge range of softboxes and modifiers fit it. Buying a Bowens-mount light future-proofs your setup — you can add or swap modifiers from any brand.

Daylight or bi-color lights?

Daylight-balanced (around 5600K) lights mix cleanly with a window and are simplest. Bi-color lights let you shift warm to cool to match a room or a mood, at a small premium. For a first key light, either works; bi-color adds flexibility.

Do I need RGB lights?

Only for colored background accents — the blue or purple wash behind a creator. RGB is a look tool, not a key light. Get your key and fill right first; add an RGB panel or tube when you want that stylized background.
