Editorial Policy

These are the rules Wide Open Gear operates by. They exist so you can trust what you read here, and so we can be held to a clear standard.

Independence

Our recommendations are our own. No brand pays to appear, to rank higher, or to receive a more favorable verdict, and we accept no free products in exchange for coverage. We earn money through affiliate links (see our affiliate disclosure), but a link’s commission never influences a recommendation. When a cheaper option is the better buy, it’s our pick.

Sourcing and accuracy

• Specificationscome from manufacturers’ published spec sheets and product listings, and each product review links to the source it was read from, with the date it was read.
• Factual claimsabout standards (memory-card speed classes, battery-measurement standards, connectivity) are cited to the relevant standards body where possible, listed in each guide’s Sources section.
• Pricescome only from an automated live check of the retailer, timestamped. We never display a price we can’t currently verify.
• Unknowns are labeled.Where a manufacturer doesn’t publish a figure, we say so rather than estimate it.

No fabrication

We do not invent reviews, testimonials, star ratings, or hands-on testing results. We do not own most of the gear we write about and we never claim otherwise. Our value is analytical — reading and reasoning about published information — and we present it as exactly that. Our full method is on the how we review page.

Corrections

We aim to be accurate, and when we get something wrong we fix it. If you spot an error — an outdated spec, a broken link, a pick that’s no longer sold — please tell us. We correct factual errors promptly, and where a correction materially changes a recommendation, we note it on the page. We’d rather be corrected than be wrong.

Updates and freshness

Gear and prices change, so we review our main guides on a regular cadence: checking that picks are still available, prices are live, and no newer model has replaced a recommendation. We update the “last updated” date on a page only when its content genuinely changes, so the date means something.

Medical, legal and safety topics

Wide Open Gear covers consumer gear, not regulated professional advice. Where a topic touches on safety (for example, drone rules), we point you to the official source rather than substituting our own judgment, and we encourage you to verify current regulations yourself before acting.
