About Wide Open Gear

Wide Open Gear exists because buying camera and creator gear is harder than it should be. The category is full of spec-sheet one-upmanship, breathless “best ever” headlines, and reviews that bury the buy button three scrolls down — if they tell you the price at all. We wanted the opposite: a site that reads the spec sheet against what you actually shoot, tells you plainly when to save your money, and makes the price and the recommendation easy to find.

The name is a photography term. “Wide open” is the aperture you open to for that clean, subject-first look — the background blurred away so the subject is all you see. That’s the idea here too: the gear pick is the subject, and the noise — the hype, the clutter, the hidden buy links — is blurred out.

Who writes this

Wide Open Gear is written by Stephen V., an enthusiast who’s genuinely into this stuff — the kind of person who reads the manual, compiles the published specs, and does the math before spending money on a camera or a mic. That’s the honest description, and we’re careful to keep it honest.

We are nota test lab, and we don’t pretend to be. We don’t own a shelf of every camera we write about, and you won’t find us claiming “in our testing” for gear we haven’t held. There are no fabricated star ratings, no invented testimonials, and no paid placements anywhere on this site.
