White Balance Explained: Getting Accurate Colors

Why the same white looks orange indoors and blue in the shade, and how to get colors that look right straight out of the camera.

Have you ever taken a photo indoors that came out orange, or a shot in the shade that looked oddly blue — even though the scene looked fine to your eyes? That’s white balance. It’s the setting that keeps colors looking the way they should, and once you understand it you can stop fighting weird color casts and start getting natural, accurate photos straight out of the camera. This guide explains what white balance is, how to control it, and when to bend it on purpose.

What white balance actually is

Not all light is the same color. A household tungsten bulb glows warm and orange. Midday sun is fairly neutral. Open shade under a blue sky is cool and bluish. Your eyes and brain adjust automatically, so a white shirt looks white to you in all three — but a camera has to be told how to make that adjustment. That adjustment is white balance.

The color of light is measured on a scale called color temperature, expressed in degrees Kelvin (K). Confusingly, lower Kelvin numbers are warmer (more orange) and higher numbers are cooler (more blue). As a rough map:

  • 2700–3200K— household bulbs and warm indoor light. Very warm and orange.
  • 4000–4500K— many fluorescent and mixed indoor lights. Slightly green or cool.
  • 5200–5600K— midday sun and electronic flash. Roughly neutral, the reference point.
  • 6500–7500K— overcast skies and open shade. Cool and blue.

When you set white balance, you’re telling the camera the temperature of the light so it can add the opposite color to cancel the cast. Shooting under a warm orange bulb? Auto, presets, or a custom reading

Your camera gives you three ways to set white balance, from hands-off to fully manual.

Auto White Balance (AWB)lets the camera guess the color of the light for each shot. Modern cameras are genuinely good at this, and for everyday photography AWB is a perfectly reasonable default. Its weakness is consistency: it can shift slightly from frame to frame, get confused by strong colors filling the frame, and — annoyingly — it often “corrects” a beautiful warm sunset back toward neutral, draining the mood you wanted to keep.

Presets let you pick the light source yourself, and the camera applies a fixed setting for it. The common ones are Daylight, Cloudy, Shade, Tungsten (the little bulb icon, for warm indoor light), and Fluorescent. Presets are consistent — every shot under the same setting looks the same — which makes them great when the light isn’t changing. Cloudy and Shade also add deliberate warmth, which many people prefer for outdoor portraits.

A custom or manual readingis the most accurate option. You photograph a neutral reference — a white or gray card — in the actual light, and tell the camera “this is neutral.” The camera then calibrates precisely to that light. It takes a few extra seconds, so it’s overkill for a walk in the park, but it’s the gold standard for controlled situations where color has to be exact.

Spotting and fixing a color cast

A color castis an overall tint across the whole image: too warm (orange or yellow) or too cool (blue). The easiest way to spot one is to look at something you know should be neutral — a white wall, a gray road, the whites of someone’s eyes, a sheet of paper. If those look tinted, your white balance is off. Skin tones are the other great tell: orange, jaundiced, or ghostly-blue skin almost always means the white balance needs adjusting.

To fix it, you move the temperature in the opposite direction of the problem. A photo that’s too orange needs to be cooled (shifted toward blue); a photo that’s too blue needs to be warmed (shifted toward orange). Most editors also give you a tint slider that shifts between green and magenta, which handles the greenish cast you sometimes get under fluorescent light. Nudge temperature first until whites look white, then correct any leftover green or magenta with tint.

Using a gray card for accuracy

When you need color to be genuinely accurate rather than just good-enough, a gray card (or a white balance reference card) is the shortcut. The idea is simple: place the card in the same light as your subject and take one frame with it in view. Later, in editing, you click the card with the white-balance eyedropper tool, and your software neutralizes the entire image based on that known-neutral surface. One click and the cast is gone.

Why shooting RAW changes everything

Here’s the most important thing a beginner can learn about white balance: if you shoot RAW, you can change it freely after the fact with no loss of quality. A RAW file records the raw sensor data and stores your white balance as a simple instruction, not something baked into the pixels. In editing you can slide the temperature anywhere you like and the result is identical to having set it perfectly in-camera.

A JPEGis different. The camera locks the white balance into the file when it saves the image, and correcting it later means pushing already-processed data around, which can look harsh if the original was badly off. You can make small fixes, but you don’t have the same freedom. That’s why RAW is such a safety net for color — if you get white balance wrong, it costs you nothing to fix. Mixed lighting: the tricky one

The hardest white balance situation is mixed lighting: two or more light sources of different colors in the same scene. Think of a room lit by warm tungsten lamps with cool daylight coming through a window, or an office where fluorescent tubes overhead meet a warm desk lamp. No single white balance setting can neutralize both at once — set it for the warm light and the window goes blue; set it for the window and the lamps go orange.

The practical fixes are to reduce the conflict rather than perfectly solve it. Where you can, use one dominant light source: turn off the lamps and shoot by the window, or close the blinds and shoot by the lamps. If you can’t, set white balance for whatever light falls on your subject (usually their face) and accept that the background will lean warm or cool. Creative white balance: breaking the rule on purpose

Accurate isn’t always the goal. Once you can control white balance, you can use it as a creative tool. Leave a sunset warm rather than letting Auto neutralize it, and you keep the golden glow that made you want the shot. Cool a foggy morning or a moody interior toward blueand you lean into calm, cold, cinematic feeling. The “correct” setting is just a starting point — the right setting is the one that serves the photo.

The key is that you’re choosing the look deliberately, not fighting an accidental cast. That distinction — knowing what neutral should be, then deciding whether to keep it — is what separates a confident shot from a lucky one.

Trust your screen when you correct color

One catch: you can only judge and adjust color as well as your monitor lets you see it. If your screen runs too warm, too cool, or too saturated, you’ll “correct” your photos to match a lie — and they’ll look wrong everywhere else.
