Camera settings look intimidating until you realize they all do one job: control how much light reaches the sensor, and how the scene looks while doing it. Three settings share that job — aperture, shutter speed and ISO— and once you understand what each one changes, the dials stop feeling random. This guide explains all three in plain English, shows how they trade off against one another, and ends with a simple recipe you can use today.
What exposure actually is
Exposure just means how bright your photo turns out. Too much light and the image is overexposed— washed out, with blown-out whites that lose all detail. Too little and it’s underexposed— dark and muddy, with shadows that turn to noise when you try to brighten them. A good exposure sits in between: bright enough to see detail everywhere, without losing the highlights or the shadows.
Aperture, shutter speed and ISO are the three ways your camera controls that brightness. But here’s the part that makes photography interesting: each one changes something elseabout the image too — how blurry the background is, whether motion freezes or streaks, how clean or grainy the photo looks. Learning the settings is really about learning those side effects, because that’s where the creative choices live.
Aperture: light and background blur
The aperture is an adjustable opening inside the lens, like the pupil of an eye. Open it wide and lots of light floods in; close it down and only a little gets through. Aperture is measured in f-numbers— f/1.8, f/4, f/8, f/16 and so on — and this is the part that trips up beginners: a low f-number means a wide aperture. So f/1.8 is a big opening letting in lots of light, and f/16 is a tiny one letting in very little. Small number, big hole. It feels backwards, but you get used to it fast.
Aperture does two things at once. First, it controls light: a wide aperture (low f-number) is your friend in dim rooms and at dusk because it gathers so much of it. Second, and this is the fun part, it controls depth of field— how much of the scene is in sharp focus from front to back. A wide aperture like f/1.8 gives a shallowdepth of field: your subject is crisp and the background melts into a soft blur. Photographers call that blur bokeh, and it’s the look that makes portraits pop. Close the aperture down to f/8 or f/11 and the depth of field grows, keeping far more of the scene sharp — which is why landscapes are usually shot at higher f-numbers.
So a low f-number gives you more light andmore background blur; a high f-number gives you less light and more of the scene in focus. Shutter speed: freezing or blurring motion
The shutter is a curtain that opens to let light hit the sensor, then closes. Shutter speed is how long it stays open, measured in fractions of a second: 1/1000, 1/250, 1/60, and so on. A fastshutter (like 1/1000) is open for a tiny sliver of time, so it freezes motion — a running dog or a jumping kid comes out sharp. A slow shutter (like 1/15) stays open longer, so anything moving during that time streaks into a blur.
Motion blur can be a mistake or a choice. Deliberately, a slow shutter turns a waterfall into silky ribbons or car headlights into light trails. By accident, it’s the reason a hastily grabbed indoor photo looks smeary. There are two kinds of blur to watch for: subject motion (the thing you photographed moved) and camera shake (your hands moved). A handy rule of thumb for avoiding camera shake handheld is the one-over-focal-length rule: keep your shutter speed at least as fast as one divided by your lens’s focal length. With a 50mm lens, that means 1/50 second or faster; with a 200mm lens, 1/200 or faster, because longer lenses magnify shake. Image stabilization buys you some slack, but the rule is a reliable starting point.
When you genuinely need a long exposure — a night scene, a smooth waterfall, a star trail — there is no way to hold the camera still enough by hand. Put it on a tripod. Shutter speed is also the first suspect when shots come out soft, which we dig into in why are my photos blurry.
ISO: brightness at the cost of noise
ISO controls how sensitive the sensor is to light, or more practically, how much the camera amplifies the light it captures. A low ISO like 100 gives the cleanest possible image. Raise it to 1600, 6400 or higher and the photo gets brighter without touching aperture or shutter speed — which is a lifesaver when the light is low and you’ve already opened the aperture and slowed the shutter as far as you dare.
The catch is noise: that speckly, grainy texture that creeps in at high ISO, most visible in shadows and smooth areas like skies. So the rule is simple — keep ISO as low as the light allows. Use the lowest value you can while still getting a bright enough photo at a safe shutter speed. That said, don’t be scared of raising it. Modern cameras handle high ISO far better than older ones, and a slightly grainy sharp photo will always beat a clean, blurry one you had to throw away.
How the three trade off
Here’s the idea that ties it all together. Because all three settings affect brightness, they balance each other. If you widen the aperture to blur the background, you’re now letting in more light — so you can speed up the shutter or lower the ISO to compensate and keep the same exposure. Speed up the shutter to freeze a sprinter and you’ve cut the light, so you’ll need a wider aperture or a higher ISO to make up for it. Every change ripples through the other two.
That’s why photographers picture a triangle: three corners that have to stay in balance. There is no single “correct” combination for a scene — only trade-offs. Do you want the background blurred or sharp? The motion frozen or flowing? The image clean or are you willing to accept some grain to get the shot? You decide what matters most for the photo in front of you, and you let the other settings fall into place around it.
The shooting modes, and when to use each
You don’t have to set all three by hand. That’s what the mode dial is for — it lets you control the settings that matter to you and hand the rest to the camera.
- Auto— the camera picks everything. Fine for a quick snapshot, but you give up all creative control, including the background blur and motion look you might actually want. Think of it as training wheels, not a destination.
- Aperture-priority (A or Av)— you set the aperture and ISO, the camera picks the shutter speed to match. This is the mode most enthusiasts live in, because aperture (and therefore depth of field) is usually the creative decision you care about most. Perfect for portraits, everyday shooting and anything where background blur is the point.
- Shutter-priority (S or Tv)— you set the shutter speed and ISO, the camera picks the aperture. Reach for this when motion is the priority: sports, wildlife, kids, or deliberately blurring a waterfall.
- Manual (M)— you set all three yourself. It sounds scary but it’s just the full version of what you’ve been doing. Manual shines in tricky or unchanging light — a stage, a studio, a night sky — where you want the exposure locked and consistent from frame to frame.
You don’t climb these in order and graduate. Plenty of pros shoot aperture-priority all day. Pick the mode that gives you control over the one thing that matters for the shot, and let the camera handle the rest.
A simple “start here” recipe
If you want somewhere concrete to begin, try this. Put the camera in aperture-priority (A/Av). Set the aperture to around f/2.8 to f/4 for a person or an object you want to stand out, or f/8 for a landscape where you want everything sharp. Set ISO to 100 or 200in bright light, and let it rise (or set it to Auto ISO) as the light drops. Then glance at the shutter speed the camera chooses — if it’s slower than the one-over-focal-length rule (below 1/60 for a typical lens), raise the ISO or open the aperture until it climbs back up, or steady the camera on something solid.
Take the shot, look at the result, and adjust one thing at a time. Background not blurry enough? Lower the f-number. Photo too dark? Raise the ISO or slow the shutter. Motion smeared? You need a faster shutter, which means shutter-priority or a wider aperture. Changing one setting and seeing what happens is how the triangle stops being theory and starts being second nature.
None of this has to be memorized in a day. Understand what each setting does, make one deliberate change at a time, and read your results — that’s the whole skill.
