Best Camera Settings for Video
A practical starting recipe for clean, natural-looking video — frame rate, the 180-degree shutter rule, ISO, white balance and focus — and why each setting does what it does.
Photos and video use the same three exposure controls, but video adds a rule that stills never worry about: your shutter speed is tied to your frame rate. Get that relationship right and footage looks natural; get it wrong and it looks like a soap opera or a stuttery security camera. This guide gives you a practical starting recipe and, more importantly, explains why each setting does what it does, so you can adapt it instead of memorizing it. Start by choosing your frame rate
Frame rate is how many still images per second your camera records, and it’s the first decision because everything else follows from it. You choose it before you shoot, not in editing, so it pays to decide up front what a clip is for. Three common choices cover almost everything:
- 24 or 25fps— the cinematic look. Film has run at 24fps for a century, so our eyes read it as “movie.” Use 25fps in regions on 50Hz power to avoid flicker under artificial lights. This is the default for narrative, interviews and most storytelling.
- 30fps— the standard, slightly cleaner-looking rate common for online video, talking-head content and anything that needs to feel crisp and current rather than filmic.
- 60fps and higher— for slow motion. Record at 60fps (or 120fps) and play it back at 24 or 30fps and the action slows smoothly to half or a quarter speed. Shoot fast action or B-roll you might want to slow down at the higher rate.
A useful habit: pick your project’s base rate (say 24fps), shoot most of your footage there, and switch to 60fps only for the specific shots you know you’ll slow down. Mixing rates carelessly makes editing harder than it needs to be.
The 180-degree shutter rule
This is the single most important video-specific setting, and it’s simple: set your shutter speed to roughly double your frame rate. At 24 or 25fps that means about 1/50 of a second; at 30fps it means about 1/60. The name comes from old film cameras, whose rotating shutters were open for half of each frame — a 180-degree opening.
Why bother? Because it produces the amount of motion blur our eyes expect from moving images. Each frame captures a little of the movement that happens during it, so motion flows smoothly from frame to frame. Set the shutter much faster — say 1/500 — and each frame is frozen sharp, so motion looks stuttery and hyper-crisp, the “Saving Private Ryan” battle-scene effect. Set it much slower and everything smears. Doubling the frame rate is the sweet spot, and once you set it you mostly leave it alone.
The catch is that this locks your shutter speed, taking away one of your three exposure controls. That constraint shapes every decision below.
Resolution: shoot 4K, deliver what you need
Resolution is how many pixels make up each frame. 4K has four times the pixels of 1080p, and shooting 4K is worth it even when your final video will be 1080p. The extra pixels give you room to crop and reframein editing — punch in for a tighter shot, fix a slightly off composition, or create a second “camera angle” from one take — all without losing sharpness at 1080p output. 4K files also stabilize better and downscale to look cleaner than native 1080p.
The trade-offs are real: 4K files are large and demand more from your computer to edit. If storage is tight or your machine struggles, 1080p is still perfectly good and nothing to apologize for. But if your gear can handle it, default to 4K for the flexibility.
Aperture: your exposure and your look
With shutter speed pinned by the 180-degree rule, aperture becomes your main creative lever. It does two jobs at once: it controls how much light reaches the sensor, and it sets depth of field— how much of the scene is in focus. A wide aperture (a low f-number like f/1.8 or f/2.8) blurs the background for that soft, cinematic separation and lets in lots of light. A narrow aperture (f/8 or f/11) keeps more of the scene sharp and lets in less.
For most video, people reach for a wide aperture to get that shallow, flattering background blur. The problem is that opening the aperture wide in daylight floods the sensor with light, and you can’t use a faster shutter to compensate without breaking the shutter rule. That is where the next two settings come in.
Keep ISO low, and use ND filters outdoors
ISO is your sensor’s sensitivity to light, and raising it adds noise — grain that looks worse in video than in stills because it shimmers frame to frame. So keep ISO as low as you reasonably can, using it only to lift exposure indoors or after dark when aperture alone can’t.
Outdoors, the opposite problem strikes: even at low ISO with the shutter locked, a bright day overexposes a wide aperture. You could stop the aperture down to f/11, but then you lose your shallow depth of field. The proper fix is a neutral density (ND) filter— essentially sunglasses for your lens. It cuts the light evenly without affecting color, so you can keep the 180-degree shutter and a wide aperture even in full sun. Without one, daylight forces you to break the settings that make footage look right.
Set white balance manually
White balance tells the camera what color the light is, so whites look white instead of orange or blue. Auto white balance is convenient, but it can shift mid-shot— as a cloud passes or you pan toward a window — and those little color jumps are distracting and awkward to fix in editing. For consistent footage, set white balance manually: choose a preset that matches your light (daylight, shade, tungsten) or dial in a specific Kelvin value. The goal isn’t technical perfection so much as consistency across a scene, so clips cut together cleanly.
Picture profiles and log: optional for beginners
Your camera applies a picture profile that determines contrast, color and saturation. Standard profiles look good straight out of the camera.
